Don’t we all love a good makeover? Whether in films or TV or in your own life…they are fun and therapeutic.
In the movie business, makeovers are a classic subject. They are also popular in television and talk shows. And now in the online space too, beauty bloggers rule the roost. Some big stars have been part of these ‘transformational’ films – Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries, Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality and so on. Bollywood brought us Kangana Ranaut in Queen, Juhi Chawla in Aaina, Rekha in Khoon Bhari Maang and who can forget the metamorphosis of Kajol in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
Makeover movies “get at the heart of the underdog story and there are some very important moments that always seem to happen in them”, according to Vox, in this video that analyses the “Anatomy of a makeover movie“. It also talks about a few times when the makeover film was more about finding what one really stood for versus the need to undergo a cosmetic change of appearance.
Socially too, these films are great examples of gender stereotype. It is mostly a female character in need of a makeover to become more “acceptable” in the system. Geeky, messy, tomboyish girls and DUFFs (designated ugly fat friend) are certainly not HOT! Cinderella, any one?
